Agents name Raiders as NFL's most unstable franchise

In a survey of agents done by The Athletic, it turns out a great many see the Raiders as being the NFL’s most unstable franchise in the league.

In total, they spoke with 31 agents to get their opinions on the best and worst run organizations in the league. Seven of those agents named the Raiders. The only team with more agents pegging them as the worst in the league were the Panthers (9).

Here’s what two of those agents had to say as to why they chose the Raiders as the most unstable in the NFL.

• “Raiders. The owner (Mark Davis) frequently makes significant changes. He put Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler in charge and fired them after less than two seasons. Now, the Raiders have an inexperienced coach in Antonio Pierce and a retread GM hire in Tom Telesco. Organizations start at the top, and Davis doesn’t provide stability.”

• “Raiders. Traditional choices in this category, like Washington and Arizona, have improved or appear headed in a good direction. Vegas keeps making changes and now finds itself without an apparent quarterback of the future or legitimate starter when it needed one following last season.”

Hard to argue that hiring Josh McDaniels was a huge misstep for Mark Davis. Though I wouldn’t say firing him was a mistake. Nor would I say hiring Antonio Pierce and Tom Telesco were mistakes

One can’t argue it is a sign of instability to be going into their second straight season without a franchise quarterback. Hell, you could argue they haven’t had a *real* franchise quarterback for much longer than that.

Moving on from Derek Carr last year was a good decision. But it was several years too late. And very few organizations would put themselves in the position to not properly attempt to find a franchise QB to replace him. Certainly no successful franchises.

Raiders Believe 'There is More to' LB Amari Gainer

The Las Vegas Raiders have two of the more dependable linebackers in the National Football League: Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo. Both linebackers played well last season and are expected to take another leap this season. It seems the Raiders have a player who can do just that at a critical position on the field. In the Raiders' final preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, linebacker Amari Gainer played significant snaps, gaining valuable experience.

Can Raiders' Rushing Attack Be Effective vs. Top Defenses?

The Las Vegas Raiders want to upgrade their run game as we approach the 2024 season. The Raiders open the year against the Los Angeles Chargers, who hired Jesse Minter as their defensive coordinator after he engineered one of the best defenses college football has ever seen. Coach Antonio Pierce tabbed Luke Getsy as his offensive coordinator after he crafted excellent run games with the Chicago Bears. Getsy will look to bring that expertise to Las Vegas, which finished with the third-worst rushing attack in the league in 2023.

With a sleek new number and a good year behind him, Las Vegas Raiders safety Tre'von Moehrig is prepared to take another step forward in 2024. Moehrig put his 2022 woes behind him last season, posting a career-high 83 total tackles, one for loss, two quarterback hits, eight passes defended, two sacks and three interceptions. Moehrig is now looking to take the next step as a player, aiming to be a significant member of Coach Antonio Pierce's defense. While players will rarely ever publicly express their desire for personal accolades and will prioritize team success, Moehrig could have a chance to add a notch to his belt.

Former Giants CB Darnay Holmes Lands with Raiders

While the New York Giants have been busy scouring the waiver market for any players that could predominantly fill needs in their secondary, one of the names that they released from their 90-man roster has already found a new home on the other side of the country. On Wednesday, the Las Vegas Raiders signed former New York defensive back Darnay Holmes. The 26-year-old, who recorded seven tackles during the preseason, was believed to have a strong shot at making the roster for his fifth straight season with his versatility as a slot cornerback and special teams upside, but the Giants decided to go in a different direction. The move allows Holmes to rejoin forces with former Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, who is now entering his third season at the helm of the Raiders defense.

Las Vegas Raiders 53-man roster cuts who should end up on practice squad

Now that the Las Vegas Raiders have put together their initial 53-man roster, the team will begin piecing together its 16-man practice squad on Wednesday with the players the Raiders and other teams around the NFL cut on Tuesday. Once waivers clear, practice squad signings will begin coming in fast and furious. With that in mind, here's a look at the players the Raiders cut on Tuesday who they should seriously consider adding to the practice squad. Bradley was impressive in preseason action and showed more than enough for the Raiders to keep him around on the practice squad.

Raiders plan to enter season with 2 QBs on roster and adding one to practice squad

Tuesday was the cutdown deadline for NFL teams to bring their rosters from 90 players down to 53. On the Raiders roster, they kept just two quarterbacks, while cutting veteran Nathan Peterman and undrafted rookie Carter Bradley.

I asked Raiders GM Tom Telesco what his plan was for the position going into the season.

“Things could always change, but right now we’re looking at probably two on the active roster and one on the practice squad,” said Telesco.

That means, barring any major surprises among the cuts out there, the Raiders will stand pat with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell as their two active roster quarterbacks.

What they do with the practice squad spot is what we should find out by tomorrow. Obviously, the most likely would be bringing back either Bradley or Peterman, but should there be someone out there who they think could be an upgrade, there could be some consideration there.

The one issue with that would be the better quarterbacks out there are likely to be claimed off waivers, which means they would go on the active roster of whatever team claims them. So, if that’s not the Raiders’ plan, they would need to wait to see who clears waivers before adding them to the practice squad.

NFL 2024 preview: What's new? The new ideas the 8 new head coaches bring to their teams

There are seven new head-coaching hires and one interim who got the permanent job.

http://dlvr.it/TCR6gH

NFL coaches, execs don't think too highly of Gardner Minshew as Raiders starting quarterback

Each year The Athletic polls a group of NFL coaches and executives to put each team’s starting quarterback into tiers.

These tiers are from 1-4 and among those tiers is a ranking from 1-30. As you might expect, Patrick Mahomes came in at the top. He was joined in tier one by Joe Burrow and Josh Allen.

From there you have to drop down a ways, well into the lowest tier (4) before you find Raiders starter Gardner Minshew.

Here is what a few anonymous coaches told The Athletic about their thoughts on Minshew.

“Nobody wants him to be a starter, probably even his own team, but he won games with Indy last year,” an offensive coach said. “When you play him, the kid is competitive. He will keep you in the game — and them. It’s going to be a fight.”

“Gardner Minshew is a real gutsy player,” a defensive coordinator said. “Everybody on the team is going to love him. He is going to extend plays with his legs. He’s smart. He will be able to function in the offense. But he’s just limited.”

What’s interesting is while Minshew got 31 votes for tier four, he also got 15 votes for tier 3. That’s significantly better than last year when he got just three votes for tier 3, 22 for tier 4, and 25 for tier 5. So, he did improve the opinions of a lot of coaches and execs in his 13 starts in Indianapolis last season.

Tier 4 is described as those quarterbacks who “could be an unproven player (not enough information for voters to classify) or a veteran who ideally would not start all 17 games.”

Minshew would fall in the latter of the two — the veteran who would ideally not start all 17 games. In fact, though he comes in at number 25, there are only two quarterbacks ranked lower who would also fit into that category — Sam Darnold (Vikings) and Jacoby Brissett (Patriots).

The difference there is the Vikings and Patriots both drafted quarterbacks in the top ten this year who they hoped would be taking over the starting job right away. The Raiders just have second year former fourth rounder Aidan O’Connell who just lost the starting job to Minshew.

So, ideal or not, the Raiders are pretty much stuck with what they’ve got at least until they get another shot at upgrading the position. Which appears to be next year.

Which Raiders Have Most to Prove Entering 2024 Season

The Las Vegas Raiders are entering the 2024 season with the momentum they built at the end of the 2023 season. The Raiders are 0-0; many players and coaches will tell you that firsthand. Be that as it may, the Raiders are moving forward with Antonio Pierce as their head coach because of how the team closed last season with him in charge. The Raiders are on the verge of a pivotal season, which they hope will end with a playoff berth.

Can Raiders' Minshew Help Adams Return to Pro Bowl?

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams missed the Pro Bowl in 2023, putting an end to six consecutive appearances. Adams caught 103 passes for 1,144 yards (his lowest total since 2019) and eight touchdowns. For many other receivers in the league, the season Adams had in 2023 would be the best season of their career. For Adams, it was a letdown.

Marcus Allen identifies why Antonio Pierce is the right leader for Raiders

It's safe to say that the Las Vegas Raiders are in flux. For instance, the Raiders cut longtime quarterback Derek Carr before the season, and after a 3-5 record, they also fired coach Josh McDaniel and GM Dave Ziegler. Then, interim head coach Antonio Pierce almost led the team to the playoffs, finishing with an 8-9 record and convincing the Raiders to make him full-time head coach, and legendary running back Marcus Allen agreed with this decision. Allen made an appearance during the Raiders' “Once a Raider, Always a Raider” alumni event, where he shared his sentiments on Pierce.

Antonio Pierce has concerns as the Raiders turn their attention to cut-down day

Antonio Pierce, the usually talkative Raiders coach, sometimes speaks loudest when using the fewest words. "I think it's still a work in progress,” Pierce said. The Raiders, like other teams, won't be finished as they then will see what players might be available after being let go by other clubs. “If we can get better, then we can get better,” Pierce said, again being unusually short with his response.

49ers' Josh Dobbs' awesome reaction to chaotic final play in preseason action vs. Raiders

The final play of the San Francisco 49ers' preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders was nothing short of chaotic — a true spectacle that encapsulated the unpredictable nature of football. With the game tied at 24 and just three seconds remaining, fourth-string quarterback Tanner Mordecai lined up at the 49ers' own 45-yard line for what was expected to be the final play, given that NFL preseason overtime was abolished a few years ago. What followed was a sequence that stretched far beyond those three seconds, leaving everyone on the edge of their seats. Quarterback Josh Dobbs, who had a standout performance earlier in the game, was among those intently watching the unfolding drama.

Browns rumored to be shopping QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, should Raiders inquire?

Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s football career was launched in Las Vegas. The Bishop Gorman grad attended UCLA and went on to be selected in the fifth round of the 2023 draft. And after stepping up for Deshaun Watson for thre games last season, he’s now buried on the depth chart behind Watson and Jameis Winston.

This has led reported trade attempts by the Browns as they hope to get something in return for a player who may not see the field for them.

Up until last week, the Raiders hoped Anthony Brown could compete for the backup job. But he never panned out and they released him in favor of journeyman Nathan Peterman.

Shortly after that, they decided on Gardner Minshew as the starter over Aidan O’Connell. A competition in which neither of them stepped up to claim the job, leaving the coaches to make a tough decision between basically the lesser of the evils.

It’s safe to say the Raiders have one of the least enviably quarterback situations in the league. And you have to ask yourself if adding someone like Thompson-Robinson to the mix would be valuable.

I think it would.

You’d have to think at very least he would be a better potential option than Peterman. And at best, he could be a more viable option to start than AOC should Minshew struggle early in the season.

What it could come down to is compensation. Which I wouldn’t imagine would be much, considering most teams would probably rather just wait to see if the Browns waive DTR and they can scoop him up for nothing. But any team willing to part with a late round pick or perhaps even just a late round pick swap, may just land him.

At this point, the Raiders are in no position to be turning their nose up at potential competition at a position which basically has two quality backup caliber guys and a third guy who is probably not worth a roster spot.
